LOCATION
The JHD Doctoral Tutorial will take place at the main conference venue – Aalborg Congress and Convention Centre (AKKC) in Aalborg, which is a short walk from all hotels, the railway and bus stations.
BACKGROUND
The first objective of the EIBA John H. Dunning Doctoral Tutorial in International Business (JHD-DT) is to provide an opportunity for doctoral students in International Business (IB) to discuss their research plans and work-in-progress with a distinguished international Faculty. A secondary purpose is to acquaint them with an international network of professionals linked to the IB field and EIBA. The core faculty of the Doctoral Tutorial is composed of leading scholars in International Business.
The number of student participants accepted for the annual Doctoral Tutorial is limited to ten (as this EIBA doctoral event involves a considerable amount of faculty feedback and discussion; therefore, the current one-day format cannot accommodate more students). Please note that attendance at the whole tutorial is mandatory. The doctoral thesis with the most potential (as selected by the faculty immediately following the event) is awarded the EIBA Best Doctoral Thesis Proposal in International Business Award, consisting of a certificate and money prize.
Please note that all accepted students participating in the doctoral events must be duly and fully registered for the EIBA conference – this is a mandatory eligibility requirement. The John H. Dunning Doctoral Tutorial and Danny Van Den Bulcke Doctoral Symposium are closed and complimentary pre-conference sessions intended for fully-registered PhD student participants who have duly applied for and been accepted to one of the EIBA doctoral events.
ATTENTION: Submissions not accepted for the Doctoral Tutorial may be considered for the Doctoral Symposium; however, there is no implied guarantee of acceptance for any EIBA doctoral event – the respective organisers reserve the right of making final decisions.
GUIDELINES FOR THE FINAL PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS
Papers should be a maximum of 10 pages (Times New Roman font size 11 points, single line spacing) (excluding bibliography). Tables and figures to be placed in an appendix.
You will have 15 minutes to present. Your PowerPoint presentation should therefore consist of no more than 10 slides.
We strongly suggest that you divide the 10 pages of your paper and the 10 slides of your presentation into 6 sections as follows: (1) the central research question addressed (including a brief statement of the topic, and of the issue or problem that motivates the research) [1 page or 1 slide]; (2) theory, literature review, and hypotheses [2 pages or 2 slides]; (3) research design: method (qualitative, quantitative or mixed) and rationale for choosing this method; dependent variable and main independent variables; data sources; and analysis techniques [3 pages or 3 slides]; (4) expected results and summary of the evidence of the study thus far (including any preliminary findings) [2 pages or 2 slides]; (5) expected contribution and its significance to IB scholarship [1 page or 1 slide]; and (6) conclusions, and remaining concerns or problems to be overcome (including any specific questions for the faculty panel) [1 page or 1 slide].
After your presentation, you will receive feedback from selected faculty members for 20 minutes. Please keep in mind that the time schedule is tight, so if your presentation exceeds 15 minutes you will receive less extensive feedback.
Please remember that you are expected to attend the whole tutorial, not just your presentation and feedback slot.
The Danny Van Den Bulcke Doctoral Symposium is a half-day event with a joint opening plenary on a topical issue and small roundtable discussions. At each roundtable, 2-3 doctoral students are paired with 2-3 faculty members to discuss PhD proposals in a friendly and informal setting. The symposium is specifically designed as a forum for doctoral students at an early stage of their dissertation process. In other words, these students are currently in the initial phases of defining their research design, including the selection of theories and methods as well as type and source of data. (NOTE: PhD students at a more advanced stage may be interested in applying for the one-day John H. Dunning Doctoral Tutorial instead.)
The 2026 Doctoral Symposium will be co-chaired by Emmanuella PLAKOYIANNAKI, University of Vienna, Austria and Eriikka PAAVILAINEN-MÄNTYMÄKI, University of Turku, Finland.

Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki is Chaired Professor of International Business at the University of Vienna, Austria and Visiting Professor at the University of Turku, Finland. She serves as Associate Editor at the British Journal of Management and is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of International Business Studies. Her research interests include qualitative research and philosophy of science, as well as SME and family firm internationalization. She has published in the Academy of Management Review, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of International Business Studies and Journal of World Business, among others. She is Fellow of the European International Business Academy (EIBA) and the British Academy of Management (BAM).

Eriikka Paavilainen-Mäntymäki is Professor of International Business at the Turku School of Economics at University of Turku, Finland and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Vaasa, Finland. She is a member of the Editorial Reviewer Board in the Journal of International Business Studies. In her research, she specializes in qualitative research methods and process research, and the internationalization and growth processes of SMEs. She has published, among others, in the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Organizational Research Methods and International Journal of Management Reviews. She is a member of the AIB Research Methods SIG.
ATTENTION: Applications not accepted for the John H. Dunning Doctoral Tutorial are considered for the Danny Van Den Bulcke Doctoral Symposium. However, the final decisions of acceptance rest solely with the respective co-chairs.
The Symposium will take place in the afternoon on 10th December 2026 at the Aalborg Congress Centre (AKKC).

CALL FOR PAPERS
The 2026 Journal of International Business Studies Paper Development Workshop (JIBS-PDW) will be held on Thursday 10 December 2026, as a pre-conference activity of the 2026 European International Business Academy (EIBA) conference, to be hosted by the Aalborg University Business School.
The conference theme is “Sustainable International Business and Social Value in a Fickle World”.
The purpose of the JIBS-PDW is to provide scholars with developmental feedback on their current research projects in International Business. Authors will be paired with senior International Business scholars for constructive discussions about their papers.
The JIBS-PDW is being organized by Bersant Hobdari (Copenhagen Business School) and Catherine Welch (Trinity College Dublin), in collaboration with Guus Hendricks (Amsterdam Business School) and Emine Beyza Satoglu (Bogazici University) from the AIB Western Europe Chapter.
We invite original papers from doctoral students or faculty members who have not previously published in JIBS. We particularly encourage papers from scholars
(1) who are located in universities in emerging economies or in universities that offer limited support for international business research, or
(2) who are trained in disciplines less commonly associated with the field (e.g., human geography, political science, or economic history) but interested in conducting international business research.
While we hope that many of these papers will eventually be submitted to JIBS, the aim of the PDW is more generally to heighten the quality of IB research, and bring new scholars into the IB field.
The deadline for submissions is 14 September 2026. Each applicant can submit only one research paper to the PDW, but you may have submitted the same paper for presentation at the EIBA 2026 Conference.
(Please note that by this deadline, the deadline for submitting EIBA 2026 conference papers and panel proposals would have passed).
Papers for the JIBS-PDW must be less than 10,000 words in length. We request that you do not submit a paper that is currently under review at JIBS.
To apply to the JIBS-PDW, you should submit your research paper using the EIBA 2026 ConfTool submission system. When you press Submit you paper, you will be taken to the ConfTool webpage. Please follow the steps and choose the track named JIBS PDW. Your cover page should include all the author names, emails and affiliations.
You will be notified about the acceptance of your submission by 2 October, and you will need to confirm participation by 15 October, which is the early-bird registration deadline for the conference. All participants must register for the EIBA 2026 conference before they confirm their attendance at the JIBS-PDW.
We're looking forward to seeing you at the JIBS-PDW! Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about the event.

The PDW is open to all scholars who want to engage in conducting policy-relevant research on international business issues. We particularly encourage participation by young scholars who are unfamiliar with the publication process, by established scholars who want to engage in policy-relevant research, and by scholars who are trained in disciplines less commonly associated with the field of international business (e.g. geography, political science or economics) but interested in targeting international business journals.
How is This Event Structured?
The PDW uses an interactive panel format to discuss four questions:
- What is international business policy research?
- What are emerging topics that require more attention?
- How to get published in the Journal of International Business Policy?
- How to craft impactful manuscripts that resonate with policy actors?
After the panel discussion, the senior editors will be paired with small groups of participants to brainstorm on research ideas.

EIBA-AIB SUSTAINABILITY SHARED INTEREST GROUP: PRE-CONFERENCE PAPER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
Inaugural Collaboration between EIBA and AIB Sustainability SIG
Abstract Submission Deadline: September 1st, 2026
Workshop Date: December 10, 2026
WHY A SUSTAINABILITY-FOCUSED PDW?
Interest in research and publishing on topics pertaining to sustainability has become increasingly prevalent in International Business (IB), particularly over the past few years (an example is the increasing number of special issues with topics such as MNE sustainability strategy, MNE sustainable innovation, among many others). Given that much of sustainability research is by nature interdisciplinary and has the great potential to become a core part of the IB research domain, EIBA together with AIB Sustainability Shared Interest Group (SIG) have jointly organized this in-person paper development workshop (PDW) as part of the preconference program at the European International Business Academy (EIBA) Annual Meeting in Aalborg. The workshop aims to offer inclusive support to IB scholars who have a strong interest in sustainability-related topics.
WHO IS THIS EVENT FOR?
This PDW aims to benefit IB scholars with an interest in sustainability-related research, particularly those who have a draft paper and would like to receive constructive, tailored feedback from highly experienced editors and scholars in terms of paper crafting, theoretical development, and/or methodological soundness.
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKSHOP?
To be considered for the PDW, we invite authors to submit an extended abstract (max. 3 pages) to the conference track “EIBA-AIB Sustainability”. The submission deadline for the extended abstract is September 1st, 2026. Go to the webpage Submit Your Contribution on the EIBA 2026 webpages. This will take you to ConfTool where you should register and submit your 3-page abstract.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY ABSTRACT IS ACCEPTED?
Submitting authors will be notified of the outcomes of the review process by September 10th, 2026. Authors with accepted abstracts will be required to submit their full working papers by October 1st, 2026 to EIBA 2026 webpage Submit Your Contribution. Authors with accepted abstracts are expected to register for the main EIBA conference and participate in the PDW in person. If an author fails to submit a full working paper by the deadline, the opportunity to attend the PDW will automatically be offered to someone else. No show to the PDW will be recorded.
HOW IS THIS EVENT STRUCTURED?
The workshop is 3-hour long and consists of two parts. Part 1 offers participants an opportunity to hear sustainability research and publication insights from highly experience editors and scholars in the space of sustainability in IB. Part 2 offers a valuable opportunity for authors and editors/scholars to be assigned to small groups where tailored feedback on each of the accepted working papers is provided in an interactive, roundtable set-up. The workshop is preliminary scheduled for the afternoon of December 10th.
WHO ARE THE PDW ORGANIZERS?
This PDW is the first official collaboration between EIBA and AIB Sustainability Shared Interest Group, supported by Presidents of the two Academies. The goal of the AIB Sustainability SIG is to promote research, develop a space, and facilitate knowledge transfer in sustainability in IB, which translates into societal impact.
Questions about the SIG can be directed to: sustainabilitysig@aib.world. The SIG can be found on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/academy-of-international-business-sustainability-shared-interest-group/ and AIB website: https://sustainabilitysig.aib.world/.
